9/10 — A Must-Have for Every Apple User

The Apple AirTag is one of those products that seems so simple, but once you start using it, you can't imagine life without it. For $29 (or $99 for a 4-pack), you get a tiny tracker that uses Apple's billion-device Find My network to locate anything you attach it to — keys, wallet, luggage, backpack, you name it. Precision Finding with Ultra Wideband literally points you in the right direction. The battery lasts over a year and costs $3 to replace. It's a no-brainer.

Why I Put AirTags on Everything

I am that person who loses things. Keys? Gone. Wallet? Who knows. I once left my bag at a restaurant and didn't realize until I was halfway home. So when Apple launched the AirTag, I immediately bought a 4-pack and started tagging everything.

Fast forward to now and I have AirTags in my keychain, my wallet, my travel luggage, and my everyday bag. They've saved me more times than I can count. The one that really sold me? I was traveling and my checked luggage got sent to the wrong city. I could see exactly where it was in real time through Find My. The airline was telling me "we're looking into it" and I was like "it's in Phoenix." They found it within the hour.

How It Works

The AirTag uses Bluetooth to communicate with nearby Apple devices — and there are over a billion of them out there. When any iPhone, iPad, or Mac passes near your AirTag, it anonymously and securely relays the location back to you through the Find My app. This happens automatically in the background on every Apple device, which means your AirTag has a global tracking network without needing cellular or WiFi.

When you're close to your AirTag (within about 30-50 feet), you can use Precision Finding on iPhones with a U1 chip (iPhone 11 and later). This gives you an on-screen arrow, distance measurement, and haptic feedback that literally guides you right to it. It's like a high-tech game of hot and cold.

You can also make it play a sound through the built-in speaker, which is perfect for finding keys between couch cushions.

Design & Durability

The AirTag is tiny — 1.26 inches in diameter and 0.31 inches thick, weighing just 11 grams. It's about the size of a quarter but thicker. The polished stainless steel front and white plastic back give it that classic Apple look.

It's IP67 water and dust resistant, so it can handle rain, puddles, and even being submerged in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. I've had mine go through a car wash in a keychain holder and it was totally fine.

One thing to note: the AirTag itself doesn't have a hole or attachment point, so you'll need a holder or keychain accessory. Apple sells their own (the leather key ring is nice), and there are tons of third-party options on Amazon for way less.

Battery & Maintenance

The AirTag uses a standard CR2032 coin cell battery that lasts over a year. When it starts getting low, your iPhone gives you a notification. Replacing it is dead simple — you just press down and twist the stainless steel back, pop out the old battery, put in a new one, and twist it back on. A CR2032 costs like $3-5, so annual maintenance is basically nothing.

Privacy & Anti-Stalking

Apple built in some important safety features. If an unknown AirTag is traveling with you, your iPhone will alert you. Android users can also detect unknown AirTags using the Apple Tracker Detect app or Google's built-in tracker alerts. The AirTag will also start playing a sound if it's been separated from its owner for an extended period. These features aren't perfect, but they're the best anti-stalking measures on any tracker.

What I Love

  • Incredibly affordable — $29 single, $99 for 4-pack
  • Billion-device Find My network = global tracking
  • Precision Finding with directional arrow
  • IP67 water and dust resistant
  • 1+ year battery life with cheap CR2032
  • User-replaceable battery (no subscriptions!)
  • Built-in speaker for audible pinging
  • Anti-stalking safety features

Worth Noting

  • No built-in attachment — need a holder/keychain
  • iPhone only — doesn't work with Android
  • No real-time GPS — relies on nearby Apple devices
  • Limited range in areas with few Apple devices

Who Should Buy This

If you have an iPhone, just buy AirTags. Seriously. The 4-pack for $99 is one of the best values in Apple's entire product lineup. Put one on your keys, one in your wallet, one in your luggage, and one in your backpack. You'll forget they're there until the one time you really need them — and then you'll be so glad you have them.

They're especially essential for travelers. Being able to track your checked luggage in real time through the Find My app is a big deal for peace of mind. I will never travel without AirTags again.

Common Questions

How far can an AirTag track?
There's no range limit because AirTags use Apple's Find My network of over a billion devices. If any Apple device passes near your AirTag, it relays the location to you. Bluetooth direct range is 30-50 feet, but the crowd-sourced network means it can be found anywhere there are Apple devices.
Do AirTags work with Android?
No — AirTags require an iPhone with iOS 14.5 or later. Android phones can detect unknown AirTags (anti-stalking feature), but can't use them as trackers. Android users should check out Samsung SmartTags or Tile.
How long does the AirTag battery last?
Over a year with everyday use. When it's low, your iPhone notifies you. Replacement is easy — twist off the back, swap in a new CR2032 battery ($3-5), twist it back on. Done.
Is the AirTag waterproof?
IP67 rated — survives submersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. Handles rain, splashes, and accidental drops no problem. Not designed for swimming or prolonged water exposure though.
