Do I really not need to register it?

For recreational flying in the US, correct — under 250g means no FAA registration required. You DO still need to follow FAA rules (400ft altitude limit, line of sight, no flying near airports, etc). For commercial use, you still need Part 107 certification regardless of weight.

Mini 4 Pro is smaller, lighter, no registration needed, and cheaper. Air 3 has a larger sensor, dual cameras (wide + telephoto), better wind resistance, and longer range. For most people, Mini 4 Pro is enough. If you're a serious content creator or want telephoto, go Air 3.

Is this good for a beginner?

It's THE beginner drone. Obstacle avoidance prevents crashes, it's stable and easy to fly, and the app walks you through everything. The fact that it shoots 4K/100fps means you won't outgrow it quickly either.

Here's the deal: in the US, drones under 250g don't require FAA registration for recreational use. At 249g, the Mini 4 Pro just barely squeaks under that limit. That means you can buy it and fly it the same day — no paperwork, no hassle. It's also easier to fly in more locations since the lighter weight class has fewer restrictions.

4K HDR Video & Photography

For something this tiny, the camera is seriously impressive. It shoots 4K at up to 100fps, 4K/60fps HDR, and 48MP photos. The 1/1.3" CMOS sensor handles low light surprisingly well for a drone this small. Those slow-motion shots at 4K/100fps? They look cinematic. D-Log M color profile gives you flexibility in post-production if you're into color grading.

Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing

This was the feature that sold me. Sensors on all four sides detect and avoid obstacles automatically — the drone will stop or fly around trees, buildings, and other stuff rather than crashing into them. Previous Mini models didn't have this and crashes were super common. Now you can actually fly with confidence.
