9/10 — The Best Earbuds for Sound Quality

If you care most about audio quality in wireless earbuds, the Sony WF-1000XM5 are the ones to get. LDAC hi-res audio codec, incredible noise cancellation, and the most natural sound signature I've heard from true wireless earbuds. They're 25% smaller than the XM4s and fit perfectly.

Sound Quality Is King

These sound incredible. Sony's new Dynamic Driver X produces rich, detailed audio across the entire frequency range. Bass is punchy without being muddy, mids are clear and present, and highs are crisp without being harsh.

The real standout is LDAC support — Sony's hi-res audio codec that transmits up to 990 kbps. If you stream from Tidal or Apple Music Lossless, you'll actually hear the difference. These are the best-sounding true wireless earbuds I've used.

Noise Cancellation

Sony's V2 processor handles the ANC and it's seriously good. Not quite AirPods Pro 3 level in my testing, but very close — and some people actually prefer Sony's ANC because it sounds more natural. The Ambient Sound mode lets you dial in exactly how much outside noise you want to hear.

25% Smaller & More Comfortable

Sony made these significantly smaller and lighter than the XM4s. They fit flush in my ears now and I can wear them for hours without fatigue. The foam tips provide excellent passive isolation too, which helps the ANC work even better.

IPX4 water resistance handles sweat and light rain. I use these for workouts regularly.

Speak-to-Chat & Multipoint

Speak-to-Chat automatically pauses music and lets in ambient sound when you start talking. Multipoint connects to two devices simultaneously — I keep them connected to my phone and laptop. When a call comes in on my phone while I'm working on my laptop, they switch smooth.

Battery Life

8 hours with ANC on, 24 total with the case. That's solid. Quick charge gives you 60 minutes of playback from just 3 minutes of charging. The case is compact and charges via USB-C or Qi wireless.
