Techie Dani recommends the Terra Kaffe TK-02 as the best super-automatic espresso machine you can buy. After owning machines from Breville, Philips, and the original TK-01, this is by far her favorite. 408 drinks brewed in the first few months — and she's not slowing down.
Why This One Wins
I've owned a lot of these machines. A Breville, a Philips, the original Terra Kaffe TK-01, and now the TK-02. This is my fourth (maybe fifth?) super-automatic, and it's not even close — the TK-02 is the best one I've ever had.
If you love cafe-quality espresso but don't want the hassle, this is the machine. It's a fully connected, super-automatic espresso and coffee machine with a gorgeous touchscreen, a genuinely useful app, and it makes incredible drinks at the push of a button.
Build Quality & Design
First thing you notice: it's beautiful. The whole shell is a really nice matte, durable plastic, and it comes in white — which was honestly a big seller for me because my kitchen is very light and bright. A white machine just looks so sleek compared to the usual black boxes.
One of the biggest upgrades from the TK-01: all compartments are forward-facing. Water tank, drip tray, waste bucket — everything opens from the front. That's huge if you have it under cabinets or in a smaller space. No more pulling the machine out to refill water.
The Specs That Matter
The water tank is 75 fluid ounces — that's massive. And here's a small detail I love: when you slide the tank back in and shut the magnetic door, you can actually see the water level from the side. I've never had a machine that does that before. You can glance at it before brewing and know if you need to refill. Such a smart design choice.
The bean hopper is 16 ounces with what they call "easy flow" — and it actually is. My TK-01 would sometimes jam up and I'd have to wiggle my fingers in there to get the beans flowing. Never happens with this one. A standard bag from the coffee shop fits right in. And both the hopper lid and the side panels are all magnetic — they just snap on. It's the little things.
The drip tray holds 40 fluid ounces, so you don't have to empty it as often. The waste bin holds about 10 pucks. And there's a separate little hopper for pre-ground coffee if you want to throw in decaf occasionally.
The Milk Frothing Situation
OK this is where it gets really fun. The machine comes with a milk craft carafe — you pour your milk in, plug the silicone hose into the machine, and you're good to go. When you're done, just disconnect it and store the carafe in the fridge.
There's an adjustable milk aeration dial on the side of the machine. Want thick, foamy cappuccino-style milk? Dial it all the way down. Prefer smooth steamed milk for a latte? Turn it up. You can even adjust it mid-brew, which is pretty cool. I keep mine all the way down because I like everything as foamy as humanly possible.
The foam quality genuinely impresses me. Thick, not too many bubbles, really nice microfoam. For a machine where you literally just press a button, the milk drinks are pretty amazing. The cortado and cappuccino especially — they look and taste like they came from a coffee shop.
The App
The TK-01's customization was possible but annoying. The TK-02 app fixes that completely. It's honestly really good and relatively simple:
- Drink customization: Tap any drink, adjust shots, water volume, espresso profile, brew temperature, grind size. Save it. Done.
- Custom drinks: Create your own named drinks with exact specs. Mine says "Dani's Espresso" and it's dialed in exactly how I like it.
- Screen reordering: Rearrange the drinks on the touchscreen from the app so your favorites are front and center.
- Scheduling: Two options — Auto Wake (machine turns on and heats up at a set time) and Auto Brew (actually makes a drink at a set time). I use Auto Wake at 5:45 AM every morning so it's hot and ready when I come downstairs.
- Remote brew: Wake up, roll over, pull up the app, hit brew. Coffee is waiting for you downstairs.
- Stats: This is such a girl math moment — the app tracks how many drinks you've made and how much you've "saved" vs. going to a coffee shop. I'm at 408 drinks and almost $1,200 in savings after about 4 months. I'll break even on the machine cost in another month or so.
Auto Sleep (Finally)
The TK-01 just stayed on literally all day long, and we'd constantly forget to turn it off. The TK-02 has a customizable auto-sleep mode — set the time you want it to shut down at night and forget about it. Sounds basic, but it was a big flaw on the first machine, so I'm glad they fixed it.
Self-Cleaning
After every couple of milk drinks, the machine prompts you to clean the milk system. It's one button press — it purges the milk out of the steam lines so nothing gets nasty. It'll also tell you when it needs descaling or a full brew unit clean, and it walks you through it on screen. Super foolproof.
The Drinks
I pulled six of my favorites on camera: espresso, americano, drip coffee, cortado, cappuccino, and latte. Every single one was great.
- Espresso: Nice crema, really smooth shot
- Americano: Solid. Just the way I like it — because I literally programmed it that way
- Drip coffee: Brews in little spurts, tastes like a pourover to me. Great option if you're not a big espresso person
- Cortado: One of my favorites. The foam is thick and creamy — pretty amazing for a machine where you just press a button
- Cappuccino: Even more fluffy foam than the cortado. I'm just so impressed that a machine can do this without any human intervention
- Latte: Really creamy, really smooth. You can add an extra shot on the fly or preset it in the app
What I Love
- By far the best of the 4+ machines I've owned
- 75oz water tank with visible level indicator
- 16oz easy-flow bean hopper (no jamming)
- All forward-facing compartments
- Adjustable milk aeration dial
- Genuinely great app with scheduling
- Beautiful white design
- Large touchscreen
- Auto sleep mode
- Self-cleaning milk system
Worth Noting
- Still a little splattery (you'll wipe the drip area)
- No cup warming station on top
- Milk craft carafe is plastic (would prefer stainless or glass)
- Premium price — but you'll break even in a few months
Who Should Buy This
If you want something smart, connected, and techy that looks nice, is good quality, and makes a really good drink for literally only pushing a button — I highly recommend the Terra Kaffe TK-02. I recommend it to all my friends. I would totally buy it again.
If you're someone who goes to Starbucks every single morning and you're trying to get off that kick, this is especially great. The app even tracks your savings — I'm almost at $1,200 saved in just a few months.
