9/10 — Incredibly Impressive V2H Backup Power

Techie Dani recommends the Tesla Cybertruck Powershare system for anyone who wants seamless whole-home backup power from their Cybertruck. The switchover during a simulated outage was almost instantaneous — literal seconds. Imagine the power going out in the middle of the night and you never even notice. That's what this delivers.

What Is Powershare?

Powershare is Tesla's vehicle-to-home (V2H) bidirectional charging system. It lets your Cybertruck power your house during a power outage — and your house charge your truck when the grid is up. The whole idea is that because the Cybertruck has such a massive battery, you can keep your home running for potentially days without grid power.

🆕 Update (Feb 2026): Powershare is no longer Cybertruck-exclusive. The 2026 Tesla Model Y Performance now supports Powershare V2H functionality as well, making vehicle-to-home backup power accessible to a much wider range of Tesla owners. The same Powershare Gateway and Universal Wall Connector setup applies.

When I ordered my Cybertruck, Tesla had me fill out a survey about my house — electrical panel info, photos, AC specs, all of it. They send that to a local electrician who checks whether you're eligible for the Powershare technology. Once you check all the boxes, they give you a quote, get the equipment in, and schedule the install.

The Installation

We worked with Trout Electric for a couple months and they were awesome. Here's what the install includes:

The final result looks really nice. The Gateway has Tesla branding with a beautiful shiny glass front. I think they did a really great job.

The Universal Wall Connector Is Clutch

OK so this is one of my favorite parts. The new Tesla Universal Wall Connector has TWO ways to charge. Pull it out and you've got the standard Tesla NACS port for all your Teslas. But flip open the adapter and there's a J1772 connector — which pretty much charges every other electric vehicle. So if your friend comes over and needs to juice up their non-Tesla, they can use your same connector. That's really awesome.

This connector came with the Foundation Series Cybertruck, but you can also purchase it separately on Tesla's website.

The Power Outage Test

OK — the moment we all were waiting for. We pulled the Cybertruck into our garage (it fits in a standard garage, by the way), plugged it in, and had Cory go flip the breaker to simulate a power outage.

I was expecting to wait around for maybe a minute or two. At the low end, maybe 30 seconds. What actually happened?

It was almost instantaneous. Like, the power went out and came right back on. I hardly even got a shot of the lights being off. I literally thought Cory flipped the breaker back on and it wasn't actually real — but it was real. That was crazy.

Think about it: the power goes out in the middle of the night, you're asleep, your car is plugged in — for it to repower your house without any noticeable lag at all is pretty amazing. You wouldn't even notice.

How Long Can It Power Your House?

Inside the Cybertruck's display, it shows your real-time energy usage and estimates how long it can keep your house running. In our test, we were using 1.4 kW just running the house normally (not being conservative at all). At 78% state of charge with the lower limit set to 20%, that gave us 58% to play with — and the estimate was about a day.

Honestly, that felt a little low to us. We were expecting more. But the software is still in beta, so we'd really have to put it through a full day test to see what it can actually do. I'm hoping to get 2-3 days in a real outage scenario with more conservative usage.

What Gets Backed Up?

The Cybertruck runs on a 60-amp breaker, and most homes have a 200-amp panel — so you can't always back up everything. The biggest limitation is AC systems: if your AC breaker is over 50-60 amps or the LR rating exceeds 110, the truck can't handle it.

The electrician focuses on your essentials: Wi-Fi, living room, kitchen, refrigerators, lights — basically everything you need to stay comfortable for a few hours (or days). In some homes with smaller AC units, they can back up everything.

One thing to keep in mind: even if most things are backed up, you still need to manage your loads. Don't run the AC while cooking dinner and running the pool at the same time. The system does have a safety feature — if the load gets too high, it'll shut down momentarily to protect the truck and the system, then reset itself.

What I Love

  • Near-instantaneous switchover (literal seconds)
  • Clean, professional install with Tesla-branded Gateway
  • Universal Wall Connector charges Tesla AND non-Tesla EVs
  • Automatic transfer switch — no manual intervention needed
  • Built-in safety shutoff if you overload the system
  • Real-time energy monitoring on the Cybertruck display
  • Cool visual indicators (purple Cybertruck emblem, reverse light flow)
  • No separate battery purchase needed — your truck IS the battery

Worth Noting

  • Software still in beta — estimates may not be fully accurate yet
  • 60-amp circuit can't handle large AC systems
  • You need to manually balance loads during outages
  • Backup time estimate felt lower than expected (~1 day at 78%)
  • Installation takes professional coordination and a couple months lead time

Who Should Get This

If you have a Cybertruck and you live anywhere that power outages are a thing — even occasionally — this is a no-brainer. The fact that your truck can seamlessly keep your house running without you even waking up is honestly incredible. I'm super impressed with the whole system.

Huge thanks to the Tesla Energy team for getting us the beta software early to test. I can't wait for it to roll out to everyone. If you have any questions about the system or the Cybertruck, drop me a comment — I'm happy to help.

Common Questions

How fast does Cybertruck Powershare kick in during a power outage?
Almost instantaneously — literal seconds. I simulated an outage by flipping the breaker and the truck repowered the house so fast I thought someone turned the power back on. You wouldn't even notice it happening in the middle of the night.
How long can a Cybertruck power your house?
It depends on your energy usage and battery level. In my test at 78% charge with a 20% lower limit, the system estimated about one day running normally. With more conservative usage, you could potentially stretch it to 2-3 days. The software is still in beta so estimates may improve.
What does the Powershare installation include?
A Powershare Gateway with automatic transfer switch, a backup loads sub-panel, a Tesla Universal Wall Connector (supports both NACS and J1772), and a raceway to keep wiring clean. Tesla coordinates with a local electrician who handles everything.
Can Powershare back up your entire house?
Sometimes! The Cybertruck runs on a 60-amp circuit, so large AC systems (breaker over 50-60 amps) can't be backed up. Your electrician will prioritize essentials like kitchen, fridge, Wi-Fi, and lights. In homes with smaller AC units, full backup is possible — you'll just need to manage your loads and not run everything at once.
